Sushma Swaraj is widely tipped to take over as the leader of the Opposition from L.K. Advani when he quits the post. She has the "full" backing of the RSS and those in the BJP whose "veto" counts in critical decisions (Advani and party president Rajnath Singh), sources claimed. It is learnt that Advani has told Sushma, his deputy in the Lok Sabha, she will succeed him and Arun Jaitley will continue as the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

With Opposition parties stalling Parliament for the second day on Friday, the Government has decided to hold discussions with the leaders of some political parties to sort out the problem over the new sugarcane pricing policy. The leader of the Opposition, Mr L.K. Advani, the Samajwadi Party chief, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, and the RLD chief, Mr Ajit Singh, are among the leaders expected to attend the meeting on Friday with the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the Leader of the Lok Sabha.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani and Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily are expected to meet Friday evening to finalise who India's new chief information commissioner will be. Present information commissioner M.M. Ansari and Right to Information (RTI) activist Shekhar Singh are the frontrunners for the post. "The meeting is expected to take place today (Friday) evening as the prime minister has to leave for his trip to the US Saturday," a government official said.
